What is parenteral nutrition, HPN?

Intravenous (parenteral) nutrition is given as a drip directly into the bloodstream via a large vein (blood vessels). In Sweden, this type of home treatment has existed since the beginning of the 1980s. HPN patients need intravenous nutrition for a long time, throughout their upbringing or perhaps throughout their lives. These children, adolescents and adults are not able to absorb nutrients from food in the usual way through the gastrointestinal tract. In this situation, malnutrition can be avoided by supplying nutrition directly into the bloodstream via a so-called venous catheter or venous port. In order to be able to manage the treatment with intravenous nutrition at home, it is important that everyone involved receives a thorough education in the treatment method before going home.

How do we conduct our organisation

Summer meetings
The association's main goal is to be able to arrange a family reunion every year in combination with the annual meeting. It is very valuable for everyone with HPN and their families to meet other families in the same situation.

Research and Development
The association monitors research and development with the help of doctors, nurses and dietitians and others who have patients with HPN.

HPN-Spegeln
As a member or support member, you receive our association magazine, which is published once a year.
